THE SOUNDEX PROJECT

To better help those researching their Loomis family lines, we have undertook a project to scan the Soundex for the U.S. Census records for all Loomis entries. Many of you are not located within easy access to a National Archives Facility and many libraries carry only a limited range of Soundex microfilms, usually just those for that state and those surrounding it. Now you have the opportunity to see these records quickly and easily on line.

To look at a Soundex record, simply click on the state abbreviation below. As this is an on going project, not all states are complete yet, if you click on a state below, you may be directed to a page which shows an "under construction" sign. Please check back within a few days, as this indicates a state that is currently having the information inputted. State information is being added from West to East, so this will help you determine how soon the information will be posted.

Accuracy is important to us as it is to you, unfortunately, some of the microfilm reproductions of the Soundex cards are very poor, if not unreadable. In those cases you will see question marks after an entry. Further, the location provided by the Soundex may not be accurate, the time it would require to do a follow-up and verify the actual census record would tax our resources, so if you discover an error, please inform us so that we may correct it.

Here is a sample of a Soundex record:

The first line is the year and state for which the Soundex refers, the second line we have added to identify the individual with the numbering system used in "The Loomis Family in America" book, copyright 1908, E. S. Loomis. The next line lists the head of household, the month and year of this individuals' birth date, his or her age at the time of the census taking and the state where this individual was born. The next line gives information on city or county where this family was living when the census was taken and information as to where the actual census record is located: V=Volume, E=Enumeration number, S=Sheet or page, and L=Line, the line on this sheet where the first individual is listed.

The next entries, if any, will be listings of each member in this household. Each person's first name will be listed, his relation to the head of the household, (abbreviations include W=wife, S=son, D=daughter, Bro=brother, Sis=sister, MnL=mother in Law, etc.) their birth month and year, age, and where they were born. We will also include the Loomis book number, if we can determine it after the location of birth. The actual census has more information not included in the Soundex such as where a person's parents were born, family income, profession, etc. But a lot can be found out just from the Soundex and will help in locating a particular family and where to locate their census.

Should you discover a Soundex record that you can identify and know the family line to which they belong, please let us know, so that we can put the proper Loomis identification number on their Soundex and to update our files. We have provided a state abbreviation chart at the end of this page.
